"We have a secret in our culture, it's not that birth is painful, it's that women are strong." ~Laura Stavoe Harm
I'm a lover of all things beautiful, which means so much more in this world than we give credit to. I tend to notice the things that most go unnoticed and try to help them bloom. I take time for tea and the little things in life; a good cup of coffee, ticklefests with my son, endless piles of storybooks and summer swims. I'm the mother to an energetic, compassionate boy who I wouldn't trade for anything and I'm married to the love of my life and adore watching him be a father to our son. I was born and raised in the Okanagan Valley but through travel and living overseas in China and New Zealand I have learned that home is wherever you make it and a nest can be created anywhere. All things natural bring me joy whether it be from whole foods to essential oils and I try to incorporate them into my daily life. My decision to become a doula was clear - I had a wonderful birth experience in New Zealand with midwifery and hospital care and I vowed to make that kind of care known to all. My son would call me 'mama bird' as I created cozy 'nests' wherever we made home so Mama Bird Doula was born from a love to nest and nurture. I was a doula for 5 years where I attended every kind of birth. I have such gratitude for being welcomed alongside so many families through their sacred journey.
After serving countless families throughout birth + labour I saw such a need for postpartum care.
So much planning goes in to birth but for some reason a little less goes into the after part. And it broke my heart to see families feel alone and lost at home with this new little addition when the days blend together, a shower seems out of reach, exhaustion sets in and there are so many questions. Support is so necessary as we’re not meant to do this alone. So I vowed to dedicate my doula career to postpartum care. I take joy stepping into a home to help navigate those early days, be a listening ear and offer support where I can. I aim to help prevent postpartum depression through support and awareness and hope to end the stigma of the ‘perfect body’ or ‘having it all together’ after baby arrives. We know it’s beautiful and hard and ugly and joyful and scare all at the same time, and I’m here for it all….I’m here for you, anytime.
I have a passion for individuals to see their full potential, bravery, strength and beauty in all aspects of their lives including labour and birth and the fourth trimester. And I love families; witnessing the family unit come together through joys, adventure, trials and everything else that life throws. It's a beauty to see a family grow and welcome a baby and I'm honored to be a postpartum doula welcomed into the early steps of parenthood.
